Parents Around The World Are Reinventing Education By Opening Acton Academies.
My name is Candace Sekyere, and I am a mom of 3 daughters, a wife, an entrepreneur, and the co-founder of Acton Academy Idaho Falls.
I’m wondering if we might have a few things in common. If you’re like me, you:
- Tried traditional schools or homeschooling but still felt like there was more to education.
- Believe your children deserve a relevant education free of the outdated confines of the traditional school, including hours of homework and dozens of fill-in-the-blank tests.
- Hope your child can learn real-world skills through hands-on projects.
- Would love for your children to be in a small school where they are known by name and given individualized encouragement.
- Desire your children to be in a school where being kind, developing meaningful friendships and learning to be a person of integrity is deeply valued.
- Want your children to find their life’s calling and be inspired to be world changers.
As a former teacher, I am very aware that our current school system is outdated and isn't effectively preparing our children for their future. Even though I never expected to start my own school, it has become my hero's journey.
I am very grateful I came across Acton Academy, which started me on this journey.
If you are ready to reinvent education for your family, I encourage you to contact me to see if our school is the right fit for your family. I look forward to meeting your family.
As a former teacher in the public school system, she is very aware of how outdated and broken our current school system really is. When it was almost time for her to enroll her oldest daughter in elementary school, she started looking for alternative options to the traditional school system. That is when she discovered Acton Academy and set her mission to bring this innovative school to Idaho Falls for her daughters and the children in her community.
Abbie recently moved to Idaho Falls from Charlotte, North Carolina and is excited to be a part of Acton Academy Idaho Falls. She has a BA in Religion with a concentration in Youth Ministry from Liberty University. Her background includes being a pre-school teacher, a children’s specialist ski instructor, and most recently a children’s pastor. Through these experiences, she has developed a love of game-based learning, and helping children think more deeply about the world and their role in it.
Abbie has a passion for lifelong learning and loves making things with her hands. She is an avid skier, potter, and loves going on bike rides with her husband.Abbie believes that every child has the potential to change the world, and she is excited to guide and support the learners as they each embark on their own hero’s journeys.
Cassidy is originally from the desert in Arizona and moved to Idaho Falls a few years ago to experience the snow and cold for herself. She found out she quite liked the area and never looked back. She has always had a love for education and has always believed in exploring other options beyond the public school system. Thus she found herself working at a local Montessori school in the area.
After taking the Montessori training and falling head over heels in love with it; she began teaching and the rest after that is history! Cassidy believes that “within the child lies the fate of the future.” Thus why she’s excited to join Acton and join them on their approach to fulfilling the Hero’s journey. She’s an advocate for lifelong learning, and cannot wait to support the children with gaining the independence needed to grow and foster their own potential to fulfill their hero’s journey!
On days she’s not in the classroom you most likely will find her in a coffee shop or in the library curled up with a book! It’s also not unusual to find her strolling along the aisles of Target. She's also an avid fan of the outdoors.
Jeff Sandefer lives a dual life as an entrepreneur and a Socratic Guide. As an entrepreneur, he founded his first company at age 16 and went on to found or co-found seven successful businesses.
As a Socratic teacher at the University of Texas, Jeff’s students five times voted him the school’s Outstanding Teacher and Businessweek named him one of the top Entrepreneurship professors in America.
Jeff went on to co-found the Acton School of Business, an MBA program perennially ranked by the Princeton Review among the best in the nation. In 2012 The Economist honored him as one of the top fifteen Business School professors in the world.
Jeff is a graduate of the Harvard Business School, where he served for over twenty years on the school’s governing committees. He was a longtime director of the Philanthropy Roundtable and National Review magazine and one of the youngest members ever elected to the Texas Business Hall of Fame.
Laura lived on both US coasts and in between as a child, then settled into Vanderbilt University for her undergraduate studies in the College of Arts and Science.
After being awarded the highly competitive Walter Wattles Fellowship at Lloyd’s of London, Laura worked in the aviation insurance industry in New York City.
Deciding to follow her calling into the world of education, Laura returned to Nashville and earned her Master of Education at Peabody College. This led her to her work at the Oklahoma Arts Institute, creating fine arts education programs for teachers and talented high school students.
Laura married Jeff Sandefer and is the happy mother of Sam and Charlie and step-mother to Taite. It is the inspiration of these children that led Laura and Jeff to co-found Acton Academy.
Her greatest hero is her mother who was a Master Teacher. Her wisest mentor is her father who sent her off to college with two words of advice: "Be curious."
